Message from the President
Fellow alumni, I'm excited to be writing to you in order to share the many great things happening at the Alumni Association in the first half of 2010.
First and foremost, we've set the date for our 2nd annual "Alumni Day" and the major reunion classes have agreed to hold their events that weekend - which will most likely make Alumni Day 2010 the largest alumni event in our history. Set your calendar for July 31st, 2010!
And of course that means reunions, reunions and more reunions. So if you are in the class of 2005, 2000, 1995 or 1990, it's your time! Read on below for information on how you can help plan your class reunion.
This spring will mark our 4th annual career education day at TJ during 8th period. If you would like to to participate in this great event at the school, by sharing your professional experiences with students, please let us know!
This spring we're planning on dusting off our National's gear for another tailgate party! The date and details have not been set, so stay tuned for more info. Tickets will go on sale soon.
I'm very excited to share with you the Partnership Fund's Alumni Capital Campaign. They have set a goal of raising $250,000.00 and I know we can do it! We had several alumni donors last year during reunions and I'm certain there are many more alumni out there that care about TJ as much as we do! Please consider making a donation, large or small, every cent counts. The best way to make a donation is directly to the Partnership Fund and you may do so by visiting their web site: http://tjpartnershipfund.org/. The Partnership's Alumni Advisory Board is looking for a few volunteers to help track down lost alums. If you have a few spare hours, please contact them to lend a hand (and a computer).
Until next time, enjoy all the snow!

NEWS
Back By Popular Demand: 4th Annual Alumni Career Education Fair
Friday, April 23rd, 1:00 p.m. at TJ
Back by overwhelmingly popular demand from alumni, students, parents and TJ faculty.... Come share your professional or graduate-level success with TJ students at the FOURTH ANNUAL Alumni Career Education Fair!
The Career Education Fair provides a unique opportunity for alumni to connect with students one-on-one in a booth-style format, to share with students about the path you took toward getting to your current job or industry field (e.g. what did you major in? Where did you go to college? What do you do at your job on a daily basis? How did your TJ background help?).
TJ students will sign-up for an 8th period block (juniors/seniors in one block, underclassmen in another) to walk around the career fair, picking up information and speaking with alumni at each booth.
We seek your participation!
- We are looking for alumni from a diverse base of career fields and disciplines (including, but not limited to: medicine, science, technology, business, entrepreneurship, journalism, liberal arts, education, government, law, etc.)
- We are targeting alumni from ALL classes (1990s, 2000s) to help TJ put on an even larger and more successful fair this year!
Please e-mail Rachana Bhide (rbhide@tjhsstalumni.org) no later than February 28th if you are able to participate.
A volunteer packet will be sent to you with additional information about the event, including a cover letter to provide to your employer/graduate school informing them of your participation.
Don't miss this fantastic opportunity to once again connect with students and make a difference!
TJHSST Partnership Fund
Since it was founded in 1999, the TJ Partnership Fund has focused on fundraising from parents and corporations to fill the gap between the funds TJ receives as a Fairfax County Public School and the budget required to run a school as unique as TJ. In 2009, the Partnership Fund raised over $600,000—an impressive figure, but not enough to close this year's funding gap of $750,000.
Last year, the Partnership Fund established an Alumni Advisory Board to focus on alumni fundraising. The Alumni Advisory Board is now comprised of 15 TJ parents and alumni who have a passion for this cause:
- Nassmah Brooks (Parent 2007, 2008, 2009, 2012)
- Libby Brown (TJ 1993)
- Nancy Carter, Chair Alumni Advisory Board (Parent 2007, 2010)
- Stephen Chang (TJ 1998)
- Carolyn Cukierman (Parent 2007, 2010)
- Alpana Das (TJ 2002)
- Siva Gowrishankar (Parent 2013)
|
- Sat Joshi (TJ 2001)
- Anika Lovelace (TJ 1991)
- Mary Jo Patterson (Parent 2009)
- Erik Petersen (TJ 1989)
- Claudine Parisa Roshanian (TJ 2003)
- Stuart Stein (TJ 2004)
- Nick Turner (TJ 1996)
- Ryan Vaart (TJ 1991)
|
The Alumni Advisory Board needs your help initiating the first annual TJ Alumni Fundraising Campaign with a goal of raising $250,000!
Please consider contributing a few hours a week for 2 - 4 months to find or validate contact information for 9,000 TJ alumni. Volunteers will work with an online search service, for which training will be provided. All searching can be done from home!
To get involved in this important activity, please contact Nancy Carter, Alumni Advisory Board Chair at: alumni.JeffersonPartnershipFund@tjhsst.edu.

- We are also in the process of adopting one or two more kids through Los Angeles County. If you are looking to adopt, check your local backyard first. There are kids around you that need a family and it sometimes is less red tape and you know more about the child's background than going overseas (that said, anyone willing to take in a child anywhere, especially from Haiti, should be applauded!).
Current long-term goals: To try to leave the world a little better off for our children. Or, at least not hand them a more polluted and globally warmed-up place!
